Lovage, Levisticum officinale - also known as perpetual celery, mountain ache or maggi grass - is a large, aromatic, medicinal and condiment-growing perennial that can reach up to 2 meters in height. It belongs to the Apiaceae family, and the Levisticum genus includes only this species. Native to Western Asia and the Orient, it is prized for its aromatic leaves and edible stalks, which have a celery-like flavor. Its seeds are also used as a spice.
Lovage thrives in rich, cool soil and in sunny to semi-shady locations. Very hardy, it can survive temperatures down to -15°C.
