Nasturtiums - Tropaelum majus - are herbaceous medicinal plants in the Tropaeolaceae family. The Tropaeolum genus comprises over 85 species found in the wild from southern Mexico to Patagonia. The term Tropaeolum, from the Greek tropaion "trophy", refers to the shape of its leaves and flowers, which resemble the shields and helmets of ancient soldiers. The flowers and leaves are used raw to season salads. Its flower buds can be prepared like capers in vinegar, and the root can be eaten cooked. This medicinal plant is also appreciated for its benefits for the immune system, respiratory problems, healing, hair loss and the urinary system.
