Poppies
Poppies - of the genus Papaver - are medicinal plants in the Papaveraceae family, which includes several species ranging from the Field Poppy - Papaver rhoeas - to the Opium Poppy - Papaver somniferum. The latter is a medicinal plant with pain-relieving, euphoric, antispasmodic and antidiarrheal properties. Thanks to its juices - rich in various opiate alkaloids such as morphine and codeine - it also has well-known psychotropic virtues. Papaver rhoeas and Papaver orientale are also used for their dyeing properties, producing purplish and red hues.
