Morels belong to several species of the Solanum genus and the Solanaceae family. The fruits are sometimes considered toxic, as they contain solanine, a substance that becomes harmful when ingested in large doses. Once ripe, however, they are edible and eaten, along with the leaves, in many countries. It has also been recognized for its medicinal properties, which are sometimes overlooked because the remedies may be dangerous. In particular, it has been used to treat ulcers and herpes. Black nightshade berries can also be used as a dye, despite their fragility to light and washing. In the past, their juice was used as paint, ink or to dye paper, wines and even cured meats.
