Frequently asked questions

Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about the association. If your question is not listed here, please contact us using the form at the bottom of the page, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

  • Seeds
    • Are your seeds organic?

Yes! 100% of our products comply with the specifications of Organic Agriculture (our certificate is available upon request). Invoices, as well as our seed packets and plants, bear the label FR-BIO-10. Some of our producers also adhere to other labels, such as "Nature et Progrès" or "Demeter"

    • What's the difference between your seeds and those sold by mass retailers?

Our seeds are royalty-free and reproducible (open-pollinated), unlike the degenerating F1 hybrid varieties produced by mass retailers. You can therefore reproduce your own seeds from our seeds year after year. What's more, agri-businesses only offer an excessively limited range of varieties - reserving biodiversity for international gene banks - whereas our collection offers an unrivalled diversity of varieties accessible to all. We also work with many passionate breeders who are constantly creating new genetic resources for the enjoyment of the public domain and life. In this way, we invite gardeners to discover not only forgotten old varieties, but also modern varieties resulting from pioneering "open source" work.

    • Can I save my seeds?

You can store your seeds in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place for next season. If you want to keep them for longer, we recommend storing them in the freezer, so they retain their germinative power for many years.

    • Where are your seeds produced?

Our seeds are produced by a network of professional organic seed producers, the majority of whom are located in France. In fact, over 95% of our varieties are reproduced within the country!

Certain varieties, grown through organic or biodynamic farming, also come from Germany, Switzerland, or Italy. We have been collaborating with some of these partners for nearly 20 years. The geographical origin of our seeds is always indicated on the back of the packets. Additionally, by scanning the QR code on the packets with your phone, you will be automatically directed to a traceability page that provides all the information about your seeds in just a few seconds!

Discover our network of seed multipliers.

    • I'm having trouble lifting...

All our batches are tested once or twice a year. If the germination percentage is not higher than the legal standard, we withdraw the batch or re-sort it to achieve a better germination percentage.
Here's a link to an article explaining how we carry out our germination tests: article

So, there's little chance that it comes directly from the quality of the seeds. Let's not forget that a seed is a living organism guided by natural laws that often escape us. Between the moment you sow and the moment you see the cotyledons emerge, an invisible explosion of energy takes place beneath the few millimetres of earth covering your seed. During this period, your seeds are extremely sensitive, so you need to be attentive and patient. Don't be in too much of a hurry to sow. Get as close as possible to natural processes. Let the soil wake up with the arrival of spring. Late sowings often catch up with early sowings, as they grow faster. Experiment by sowing a zucchini seed in the ground at the same time as your first two-month-old zucchini transplants. You'll be amazed!

If, despite your experience and the care you take with your seedlings, emergence problems persist, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

      • If my seeds are last year's or several years old, have they been properly stored in a dry, dark place? Proper storage is essential to maintain their germinative power: ideally, they should be kept in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from light and dry. You can also store them in the freezer: it's not essential, but you'll be able to keep them for many, many years. In conclusion, the seed's friends are the cold and the dry - for preservation - while its enemies are heat and humidity.
      • Have I sown my seeds in the right conditions? Some species require special attention: if you're new to gardening, we strongly advise you to buy a guide or browse the many forums available on the Internet.
      • Have I sown my seeds in a place safe from slugs and snails? Some seeds germinate very quickly in the ground, and slugs or snails will devour the young seedlings before you've had time to see them emerge. If in doubt, look for the seeds in the furrow to be sure.
      • Did I sow my seeds in non-organic or over-enriched potting soil? Some commercial potting soils contain too much nitrogen. The seeds are simply burnt when they germinate. You won't see anything come out. So be sure to mix even organic potting soil with a little soil from your own garden. You'll also be informing the young seedlings about the type of soil they'll be growing in.
      • Have I kept my pots or mini-cups moist enough or too moist? If the soil dries out before the seedlings have emerged, they will perish. If, on the other hand, it's soaked with water and the temperature is too high, there's a risk of rotting.
      • Have I placed my indoor seedlings in the right place? If there isn't enough sunshine, the young seedlings will grow huge stems in search of light, and eventually fall over from exhaustion.

Watch out for damping-off! Learn to recognize and take preventive action against this fungal disease (Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Phytophtora...). Different fungi cause the disease, depending on the region, soil and type of plant. All types of seedlings, whether in the open ground or under cover, are susceptible to the disease, which can appear almost year-round and as early as late winter. It attacks newly sown seeds and seedlings alike. A risk factor is high soil or air humidity, which favours the growth of fungi, sometimes present in seed coats, but especially in commercial potting soils. In all cases, homemade potting soil is far preferable. The disease develops and spreads, causing cuttings and seedlings to die back. You can recognize the disease when the base of the stem thins and turns red or brown. Seedlings dry out and collapse before necrosing. Given the speed with which it spreads, this fungal disease is best controlled as a preventive measure. You should therefore avoid cold temperatures and humidity during the germination period. We recommend replanting in temperate (warm if possible), well-drained and aerated soil, for faster plant development. It is also advisable to promote air circulation in the soil or potting mix. As a preventive measure, you can also use horsetail and nettle preparations for watering.

    • Can't find the answer to your question? Please contact us!
  • Reproduce your own seeds
    • Can I reproduce seeds from your varieties?

Yes, all our varieties are reproducible!

In fact, we strongly encourage you to produce your own seeds! Over the seasons, you'll obtain varieties even more adapted to your growing conditions.

To learn the basics of seed production, we recommend reading Dominique Guillet's book "The Seeds of Kokopelli." Also, explore the technical sheets (in french only) on Kokopelli's blog; they will guide you in embarking on the wonderful journey of seed autonomy.

    • Is it difficult to reproduce your own seeds?

Seed production requires a great deal of care and attention, but with a little determination and passion, it's within everyone's reach. We strongly recommend reading Dominique Guillet's book "Les Semences de Kokopelli" (Kokopelli Seeds), and invite you to discover the technical sheets on our blog, which will help you to embark on the wonderful adventure of seed autonomy.

    • What's the point of replanting your own seeds?

Producing your own seeds is above all an act of resistance against a system that would like to see all seed autonomy disappear, but it obviously doesn't stop there. By producing your own seeds, you can guarantee that your garden will be much healthier, as they acclimatize to your terroir over the years. And since nature's generosity knows no bounds, you can distribute your fertile harvest to everyone around you!

    • How can we be sure that the varieties won't crossbreed with each other or with those of our neighbors?

You need to take certain precautions to avoid cross-breeding between varieties of the same species. In some cases, a sufficient isolation distance will guarantee varietal purity. In other cases, you may need to use protective veils or hand pollination. The "Semences de Kokopelli" book contains many pages of information on pollination processes and seed production techniques for each species grown in the home garden.

However, be aware that natural cross-breeding in the vegetable garden is a fact of life! Thanks to them, you'll discover the beginnings of fantastic varieties that you can then develop as you wish. Nature is playful, so have fun with her!

In short, anyone with a garden can embark on this adventure. All you need to get started is the right teaching aids.

  • Adaptability and acclimatization of varieties
    • Are there any Kokopelli vegetable varieties adapted to limestone, acid or clay soils?

In the first instance, we must avoid thinking in terms of variety, but rather in terms of species. When a vegetable species - the tomato, for example - is well adapted to the nature of a garden's soil or its geographical location, then the majority of our tomato varieties will intrinsically acclimatize, without any problem. geographical location, the majority of our tomato varieties will acclimatize intrinsically, without any problems. Of course, there are certain nuances of adaptability depending on the variety and the selection work carried out beforehand, but gardening is not an exact science, far from it, and you have to keep trying!

Most vegetable species thrive best in soil with a pH between 6.2 and 7.5 - neutral soil being defined as 7, acidic soil as below 7 and alkaline soil as above 7. Some vegetables prefer, or tolerate, slightly acidic soil: chillies, radishes, parsley, rhubarb, beans, carrots, cucumbers, onions, squash, sweetcorn, tomatoes, turnips, potatoes, etc.

You can also refer to Gérard Ducerf's three volumes "Les Plantes bio-indicatrices" (available from Kokopelli), which enable you to determine the nature of soils based on the plants that grow spontaneously in them.

At Kokopelli, we like to adapt growing conditions to the species rather than the other way round. One of the keys to success is, without doubt, soil fertility. And, in the vegetable garden, incorporating compost, green manures, using agroecological or permacultural techniques, crop rotation, etc., are all good ways of creating a fertile soil. are good ways of creating a welcoming environment for most vegetable, cereal, flower, aromatic and medicinal species.

    • Are there any varieties or species at Kokopelli that help create compost?

Any cultivated plant can produce organic matter, but some species offer little or none when harvested and consumed. This is the case with lettuces, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, etc. For this reason, we offer a wide range of fiber and carbon plants (carbon is Life!): corn, quinoa, amaranth, sunflower, sorghum, millets... After the grain has been harvested, these plants generate a very large quantity of carbon and fiber, which can be used to make balanced compost. This can fertilize not only the parts of the garden used to grow these green manures, but also those used to grow plants that produce little recyclable material.

    • Which varieties should I choose for my garden at altitude or in cooler regions?

Aware that gardening in mid-mountain areas - or in regions with very cold climates - represents a real challenge for family gardening, for over 20 years we have been offering vegetable varieties that enable us to grow certain species that are more sensitive to the cold. This is the case, for example, of the so-called Siberian tomato, or of all the more recent varieties developed in North America - by enthusiastic amateurs, by market gardeners or by universities working in the field of cold-weather gardening.melon", "watermelon", "sweet corn", "squash", "chillies" and so on.

To make it easier for you to find varieties adapted to cool regions in our wide range, we specify the earliness of the variety when we know it.We also advise you to choose varieties with small fruits. You'll find this information in the "characteristics" tab for each variety.

    • Can I grow my own tobacco?

Contrary to popular belief, which is perpetuated by the tobacco mafia, tobacco growing is not forbidden in France, but it is authorized for personal consumption only. The resale of tobacco products is strictly regulated by the French Tax Code. Article 575 K of the French General Tax Code states that: "It is forbidden for anyone to professionally manufacture cigarettes with tobacco for others, or to accidentally manufacture cigarettes with tobacco for profit, except under the conditions set out in the decree mentioned 2 of article 565 (1) or, when this manufacture is carried out in the consumer's home within the limits of his personal needs, by himself, by members of his family or by people in his service".

We recommend reading the book "Cultiver son Propre Tabac, de la graine à la feuille séchée" (Growing your own tobacco, from seed to dried leaf) by Sébastien Marc.

Tobacco is a medicinal plant traditionally used in shamanic ceremonies and rituals. And while it's more than obvious that its use has been perverted to make it a weapon of mass destruction, it would seem that it's not its consumption that causes so many cancers and serious illnesses, but rather the thousands of toxic substances and industrial waste products that find their way, miraculously or by chance, into commercial cigarettes... As well as being responsible for a health disaster, they provide fabulous incinerators for manufacturers of all kinds... So, becoming a producer of your own tobacco is a social, political and ecological commitment! Nevertheless, we strongly advise strictly occasional consumption of this mysterious and magical plant. We hope you enjoy it!

    • How do you select between the many varieties of tobacco you offer?

Virginia: This is a blond tobacco and THE most widely grown tobacco in the world. It comes from the state of Virginia in the United States and produces mild, sweet, light-tasting tobaccos. It can be enjoyed on its own. Tabacs d'Orient: These are blond tobaccos traditionally grown in Turkey, Egypt and the Middle East. Grown in their native region, they have a spicy flavor and are very fragrant. Varieties : Balikesir, Bursa, Incekara, Izmir, Ozbas, Scherazi, Shirazi, Vuelta Abajo, Yenidje, Mutki, Bafra, Celikhan, etc.

  • The Association / Join us
    • Who founded Kokopelli

Our association was created in 1999, following many adventures in the service of biodiversity, by Dominique and Sofy Guillet and Jocelyn Moulin. Jocelyn, our best spokesman, the wandering and joyful soul of the Pied Piper, left on July 31, 2017 for his last trip. Dominique - president of the association until early 2018 - and Sofy decided to leave the Kokopelli Board, after nearly 20 years of activism within the association and more than 35 years in the field of free seeds. This new impetus, far from being a retirement, is pushing them towards other militant, dissident and revolutionary adventures! You can find Dominique Guillet's personal work, Xochi for readers and friends, on his websites:

    • How is the Kokopelli Association structured?

The headquarters of the association is located in France, in the heart of Ariège, in the municipality of Le Mas d'Azil.

In terms of structure and association, Kokopelli is governed by a Board of Directors with the following members: Isabelle Chapelle, Leentje Vandoorslaer, and Ananda Guillet. The board, elected by the Board of Directors, consists of two members: Ananda Guillet as President and Isabelle Chapelle as Treasurer.

On a daily basis, decisions that do not require a Board of Directors meeting are made by various managers organized in the Executive Committee (CODIR):

      • Emmeline – Human Resources
      • Nadia – Administrative and Financial Sector
      • Jonathan – Development and Marketing Service
      • Isabelle – Fairs and Exhibitions Service
      • Leentje – Solidarity Service
      • Emmanuel – Logistics Service
      • Ananda – Seed, Communication, Customer and Technical Service
    • Why join the Kokopelli Association?

Supporting us means taking part in the protection of biodiversity by campaigning alongside all those who wish to preserve the right to freely cultivate vegetable, cereal, medicinal, aromatic and floral seeds. Thanks to our network of professional seed growers, all certified organic, we maintain a unique collection that is constantly evolving: between 1,400 and 2,000 varieties or species (depending on the season and the year).

It also means getting involved, with us, in committed battles for environmental and social causes by contributing to our various campaigns. For example, every year, with the help of our members, we distribute over 200 parcels of fertile seeds free of charge - along with agronomic advice and technical data sheets - to numerous rural communities in need. In order to play an active part in this public service initiative, we offer to sponsor cereal and medicinal seeds for our Semences Sans Frontières campaign.

    • If I am already a Kokopelli member, do I need to create an account to order my seeds?

Yes, being a member does not necessarily mean that you already have an account with us. You need to create an account when you place your first online order, and then you can place your order by logging in to your account.

To create a customer account on our site, you must enter the same e-mail address as the one used for your membership, in order to benefit from the member rate.

    • I am a member, but my account appears as non-member, why?

Either your membership has expired, or we have not registered the same e-mail address in our database. The site, which recognizes members on the basis of e-mail addresses, therefore does not consider you to be a member of the association. Send us an e-mail or call us directly. The problem will be solved in a few minutes.
Make sure that the e-mail address is identical between your customer account and your membership.

    • Can I become a volunteer or woofer for Kokopelli?

Yes, we do! Even though we have a lot of requests, but little space, you can contact us to tell us about your Woofing or Volunteer project. If we can, we'd be delighted to welcome you. Some of our producers are also happy to accept any help you can give them!

    • Where can I find you?

Here's a list of the events we'll be attending: http: //blog.kokopelli-semences.fr/calendrier/
Our exhibition team will be delighted to meet you and offer you a selection of our range of varieties, as well as books in the colors of our association.

    • What is sponsorship?

Sponsorship involves reproducing a variety or species from seeds supplied by Kokopelli, and sending us a portion of the seeds thus harvested to benefit rural communities the world over! Because it's just as important to be able to treat oneself freely as it is to be able to choose one's diet, we offer to sponsor the multiplication of medicinal and cereal seeds to all those who wish to support the Seeds Without Borders campaign.

  • Market gardeners
    • I'm a market gardener, can I place an order?

What's more, to promote the development of local market gardening based on open-pollinated varieties, we're offering you a special rate. Don't hesitate to contact us to take advantage of this offer.

    • Am I allowed to sell my vegetables from your varieties?

Yes, the legislation applies to the marketing of seedlings and seeds. A market gardener can therefore buy seeds from Kokopelli and sell the vegetable production they produce. However, he or she is not legally entitled to sell the seeds.

In any case, at Kokopelli, we strongly encourage civil disobedience in all its forms.

    • Why don't you offer larger packs?

We work mainly with small French producers. As a result, we have no stock for wholesale sales. We invite market gardeners to take charge of their own seed production, so that they can offer healthy food to their customers. Let's not forget that, even in organic farming, over 85% of vegetables come from F1 hybrids.

We can offer you a preferential price, so don't hesitate to contact us to take advantage of it.
