Cultivate well-being with these Artemisia annua plants and make your own infusions and mother tinctures with powerful medicinal properties. This mugwort, used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, can reach up to 2 m in height, and its branching stems bear an abundance of sharply divided leaves with a particularly intense fragrance, as well as a multitude of tiny flowers resembling small yellow pompons.
An exceptional source of phytoconstituents, in particular artemisinin, annual mugwort leaves have a wide range of applications in the treatment of serious infectious diseases such as malaria, as well as in preventive medicine.
How to grow Artemisia annua?
Artemisia annua prefers sunny locations and rather light, nutrient-rich soil. This plant can be grown in large pots or in the garden.
Once the last frosts have passed, from April to June, install artemisia plants in the organic garden:
- dig 20 cm-deep holes in prepared soil, 70 cm to 1 m apart in all directions;
- add a good handful of well-decomposed potting soil or compost;
- unstack the plants;
- thoroughly moisten the rootballs of each plant;
- Place them upright, burying the stem up to the first leaves, in each hole;
- close up and pack lightly around the plants;
- mulch.
Water the plants every day for the first few weeks, depending on rainfall and without drowning them, then rapidly reduce watering frequency.
Water afterwards during dry spells, as Artemisia is sensitive to water stress, and too little water will induce early seed set.
When to harvest Artemisia annua?
Artemisia annua should be harvested just before flower bud formation, as this is when its leaves contain the most active ingredients. The leaves, fresh or dried, can be consumed as an herbal tea or mother tincture.
- Harvest all leafy stems.
- Dry them in a dry, well-ventilated place, or prepare mother tinctures from fresh leaves.
