Create a mini forest-garden - For food or for a living
The garden forest, unknown in the West until recent decades, could be an answer to many of today's challenges, but what has worked so well in the tropics needs to be adapted to our climates. At the Ferme du Bec Hellouin, 3 garden forests have been planted and are being studied. This guide shares the results of these experiments, which are unique in Europe.
The mini garden forest is an adaptation tested at Le Bec Hellouin, well suited to small-scale gardens and urban environments. Productivity is the main objective. The mini garden-forest can offer fruit, berries, aromatic and wild plants, certain vegetables, edible flowers, mushrooms and even animal products. It can even become the basis for a new profession: that of "forest gardener", or sylvanier. This guide details everything you need to know to design your own garden forest, plant it, maintain it and make the most of its many potentialities.
