Sow in trays under light shelter. Transplant into pots when plants reach 3 or 4 cm. Plant out after the last frosts, 30 cm apart in all directions. You can also sow in place in spring. Cover seeds lightly with potting soil. Keep the soil moist. Then thin out to 30 cm in all directions. In mild climates, sow in place in September for early flowering. It seems that rain and cold winters favor seed emergence.
This perennial lives for several years in mild climates and can be grown as an annual in other regions. It seeds spontaneously.

It's the state flower of California. These poppies have a habit of opening and closing with the sun, making it appropriate to represent the Golden State from which they originate. The first "California poppy" was identified by the German botanist Adelbert von Chamisso during a voyage of exploration from California to the Pacific Northwest. Chamisso named the species "Eschscholzia" after the renowned botanist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz, who accompanied him on his journey. There are nearly a dozen species of poppy growing wild in the western United States.
This medicinal plant is widely reputed to relieve insomnia, children's bedwetting, nervous agitation and certain bladder and liver disorders.
