Nepeta Cataire 2 organic plants
Discover catnip, Nepeta cataria, also known as catnip, catnip or catmint. This perennial plant can reach up to 1 m in height and, in addition to its wild charm, offers medicinal properties. Above its downy, aromatic gray-green foliage emerge long spikes with a multitude of melliferous pink-purple flowers.
With its resistance to the cold, its beautiful melliferous blossoms, its health benefits and its ability to make cats dance, catnip has a thousand and one riches and is easy to grow in any garden or pot.
How to grow catnip
Catnip needs sunny exposure and rich, cool soil to thrive. It is planted in spring, from April to May, in the ground at 40 cm in all directions, after the last frosts.
Add a little compost or well-decomposed manure at planting, and water after planting and during the summer in dry periods.
Prune the plants in autumn, 20 cm above the ground, to encourage better growth the following season.
Why do cats like nepetas?
Nepetas, and Nepeta cataria in particular, contain nepetalactone, a molecule that acts on cats' olfactory system. It stimulates receptors linked to feline pheromones, resulting in a feeling of euphoria and well-being. However, not all cats go into an olfactory trance when in contact with Nepeta cataria, and according to various studies, a third of the feline population remains indifferent to it.
