- Telegraph cucumber
The Telegraphe is a very old English variety derived from the English Long Green. Hardy, it is equally suited to cultivation in the open field or under cold glass. It produces an abundance of green fruit, around 50 cm long, with few seeds and firm, crunchy, bitter-free flesh.
- Tendergreen Burpless cucumber
Tendergreen Burpless is a very old, hardy variety, well adapted to cool, damp climates. Early in the season, it produces dark-green fruits 15 to 30 cm long, with no bitterness, which can be used like gherkins.
When to plant cucumbers?
As soon as frosts are over and the soil has warmed up sufficiently, generally from April to June depending on the region, plant cucumber plants in the vegetable garden at least 80 cm apart in all directions.
However, cucumber root systems develop very quickly, and plants can quickly become cramped in their pots. If the cooler weather doesn't allow cucumber plants to be planted in the ground, transplant them into a bucket or a larger pot:
- Place a mixture of universal potting soil and garden soil in a larger pot, a third of the way up;
- remove the seedlings from the pot;
- place them at the bottom of the pot;
- fill to within 1 cm of the pot's rim with the potting mix;
- pack lightly;
- water.
How to plant cucumbers?
To plant cucumbers properly in the vegetable garden:
- dig holes about 20 cm wide and deep, at least 80 cm apart in all directions;
- place a good handful of well-decomposed compost at the bottom;
- unstack the plants;
- Place them upright in each hole;
- close up and pack lightly around the plants;
- water generously;
- mulch.
Install a staking system at least 1.5 m high, such as oars, trellises, teepees or netting, to provide support for each plant. These structures save space on the ground, make harvesting easier and produce straight fruit.
When to harvest cucumbers?
Cucumbers are generally harvested from July to October, when they are young and immature. Each plant can produce fruit for up to 2 months, and regular harvests encourage the emergence of new cucumbers.
What to plant next to cucumbers?
While combining crops in the vegetable garden can improve yields, repel certain pests and diseases, or optimize available space, it should not become a constraint or an obstacle, and should be thought through before planting, according to your expected objectives.
Cucumbers like to be grown in association with :
- corn, of which it is an excellent neighbor ;
- beans ;
- peas ;
- radish ;
- sunflowers ;
- etc.
All aromatic plants such as basil, chives, wormwood, etc. repel certain insect pests thanks to their powerful fragrance.
All melliferous plants such as borage, phacelia, marigold, etc. are also good companions for cucumbers. They attract a host of pollinating insects, essential for pollinating the flowers properly and preventing the developing fruit from turning brown and aborting.
