  • De Barbentane eggplant

De Barbentane is a very old, hardy variety from the south of France, with vigorous growth, adapted to regions with cool summers. Early in the season, it produces 8 to 10 cylindrical, shiny dark purple fruits, 15 to 20 cm long. They contain delicious, firm flesh with a sweet, fragrant flavor.

  • Early Long Violet Aubergine

The Longue Violette Hâtive is a very old variety, sometimes thorny, producing club-shaped violet-black fruits 20 to 30 cm long and 8 to 10 cm in diameter. Vigorous-growing, cold-hardy plants reach 1 m in height.

  • Diamond eggplant

Diamond, an old, early Ukrainian variety, produces clusters of 4 to 6 slender, dark purple fruits 15 to 20 cm long, with excellent flavor and no bitterness. The small size of its plants, no more than 60 cm high, makes it perfect for container cultivation!

When to plant eggplants?

Eggplant plants can be planted in the vegetable garden as soon as frosts are no longer a threat and the soil has warmed up sufficiently, generally from April to June, depending on the region.

How to plant an eggplant?

To plant eggplants properly in the vegetable garden:

  • dig holes about 15 cm wide and deep, 50 cm apart in all directions;
  • place a good handful of well-decomposed compost at the bottom;
  • remove the stalks;
  • place them upright in each hole, with the root ball and the stem buried up to the first leaves;
  • close up and pack lightly around the plants;
  • water generously;
  • mulch.

Staking is not essential.

How to care for an eggplant plant?

After planting :

  • water sparingly;
  • regularly add fermented plant extracts such as nettle, comfrey, horsetail, etc., to strengthen your plants and prevent disease;
  • watch out for attacks by Colorado beetles or slugs;
  • prune if necessary.

How to prune an eggplant plant?

Pruning eggplant plants helps to speed up fruiting, so that eggplants can be harvested earlier. To prune eggplant plants correctly:

  • Cut off the main stem, above the 5th leaf, when the plant has 6 to 7 leaves. This allows lateral shoots to develop.
  • Then prune the end of each of these branches, after the leaf above the 2nd flower.

When to pick eggplants?

Eggplants are generally harvested from July to September, when the fruit is fully formed and displays its ripe color.
