Discover the exotic with these pineapple sage plants. This aromatic, honey-bearing perennial can reach 1.5 m in height, with tender green foliage and a pineapple fragrance and flavor. In late summer, it produces magnificent bright red flowers, and can be grown both in the ground and in pots.

Find out how to grow and use pineapple sage to add its edible flowers or leaves to any recipe and bring flavor and color to your cooking.

How to grow pineapple sage

Pineapple sage is planted in spring, from April to May, in the ground after the last frosts, or in a pot.

Choose a sunny spot and favor light, well-drained, rich soil. In heavy soils, add gravel or sand for good drainage. Transplant 50 cm apart in all directions and water abundantly after planting. Less hardy than officinal and white sage, pineapple sage cannot withstand temperatures below -7°C.

How and when to prune pineapple sage?

Prune in spring, 20 to 30 cm from the base of the plant, to enable pineapple sage to recover properly.

How do I take cuttings from pineapple sage?

Take pineapple sage cuttings in summer, between June and August, before the plant flowers, for easy propagation:

  • Fill a planter, pot or cups with a mixture of potting soil and sand;
  • remove stems, 10 to 15 cm long, without wood;
  • remove the leaves from two-thirds of the lower part of each stem;
  • cut off the tips of the terminal leaves with a chisel, to limit evaporation;
  • plant the cuttings, up to the first leaves, in each pot or bucket;
  • press the soil firmly around the cuttings;
  • water;
  • shelter the cuttings in a warm place;
  • keep them moist until you take them again.

To facilitate root formation, soak the basal end of each cutting in a solution of natural cuttings hormone. This is easily prepared by cutting small sections of willow and leaving them to macerate overnight in a little water.

How to use pineapple sage

Pineapple sage, with its surprising fragrance, adds a touch of originality to any recipe. Infuse fresh leaves to make delicious, refreshing summer drinks or tasty iced teas. Chopped, they add exotic notes to all dishes and desserts.
