Thyme Compact 2 organic plants

Ref : ZA0015

Explore the world of thyme with these plants of compact common thyme, a small, compact and particularly bushy perennial subshrub, 25 to 30 cm high. Its stems, woody at the base, are covered with thin, grey-green evergreen leaves that are extremely aromatic and used in cooking and medicine for their beneficial effects. In summer, thyme is adorned with numerous small white to violet flowers, which are highly attractive to mellifluous insects. This aromatic marvel is easy to grow and maintain, making it ideal for pot cultivation.

How to grow Compact Thyme

Compact thyme is planted in spring, from April to May, in the ground after the last frosts, or in pots.

Choose a sunny spot and favor light, well-drained soil, even poor, stony soil. In heavy soils, add gravel or sand for good drainage. Transplant at 20 to 40 cm in all directions and water abundantly after planting.

Prune back faded flower stems every year at the end of August, after flowering.

Carry out a second, more severe pruning in March to maintain a compact, dome-shaped growth habit.

How to harvest and store thyme

The flowering stems and leaves of compact thyme, with its many benefits, can be harvested from April to July, as and when needed.

For optimum storage of compact thyme:

  • Place harvested stems and leaves on a sieve or cloth in a well-ventilated room;
  • wait several weeks for the thyme to dry out completely;
  • place in an airtight jar and store away from heat and light.

Compact thyme: benefits and uses

The flowering stems and leaves of thyme, harvested from April to July, offer numerous benefits. Rich in essential oils, they have anti-infectious, antiparasitic, antitussive, antispasmodic, expectorant and tonic virtues, and are consumed as herbal teas and infusions, essential oils and mother tinctures.

Thyme is one of the Provençal herbs used in bouquets garnis, and is also used in cosmetology, soap-making and perfumery.
