Arugula is a member of the Brassicaceae family and the Brassiceae tribe. Cultivated arugula - Eruca sativa - belongs to the genus Eruca, which comprises 5 known species. Wild arugula - Diplotaxis ericoides - belongs to the genus Diplotaxis, which comprises 27 known species. Arugula has a pungent taste that is much appreciated in mescluns, omelettes, soups, pestos or to spice up sauces. It's best to eat the leaves before they flower. They are an excellent source of vitamin K and a good source of vitamin B9.
