Dahlias, originally from Mexico, were introduced to Europe at the end of the 18th century, because we thought we could eat their bulbs like potatoes, but the beauty of their summer bloom soon rivaled the mediocre taste offered by the roots, and Dahlias have adorned ornamental gardens ever since. After many years of cultivation and selection, the single flowers of wild species have evolved into very different forms: single, semi-double, double, with wide or tuyautéed petals, short or tapered, etc. Conservation: After the first frosts, when the plants are completely blackened by them, pull them out to store the bulbs in the cellar or garage, then put them back in the ground the following spring!

Sow in trays under a light shelter at a temperature of around 18°C. Transplant into pots when plants have 3 leaves. Plant out after the last frosts. It is also possible to sow directly in the ground, after the last frosts, at a temperature of around 16°C.

Dahlias like deep, loose soil that's rich and cool in summer, but sunny. They can be grown in pots, tubs or window boxes in a soil mix composed of at least half soft topsoil.
