Improved - Salsify
This ancient, very hardy variety from the Mediterranean basin produces fine, elongated, tender roots with a white skin.
Sow directly in place, in rows 25 cm apart. Cover seeds with 1 to 2 cm of fine soil, tamping down and keeping the soil moist until emergence. Thin to 10 cm on the row.
Mulching is recommended. Roots are harvested in autumn and winter, as and when required. Once harvested, they can be stored for a few days in a cool place.
