This very old variety has flattened, strongly ribbed fruit with an unharmonious shape. They have a very thin skin and a sweet, delicious flavor.

This ancient variety originated in Chiapas, Mexico, and was identified by William Weaver in a 1793 painting by Raphael Paele. Others attribute a more recent origin to "Purple Calabash". It is also known as "Red Calabash" or "Calabash Rouge".
