Long-Fruited Star Moon
This variety is called "the moon and the stars" because its fruit skins are spotted with bright, irregular yellow shapes. The leaves are also speckled with yellow. Fruits are oval-shaped and weigh from 7 to 14 kg. The flesh is bright red and very sweet. One of the most beautiful watermelon varieties. Growth: 95 days.
This ancient variety, thought to be extinct, is called "Moon and Stars" in the USA. It was reintroduced in 1982 by the Seed Saver Exchange. Following a television broadcast, Kent Whealy received a phone call from a gardener, Merle Van Dore, who had preserved this variety in his garden near Macon, Missouri. It is possible that this was the "Sun, Moon and Stars" variety introduced by Peter Henderson in 1920. According to William Woys Weaver, it may be a variation of "Black Diamond".
