It was bred for many years by half-Cherokee farmer Carl Barnes in Oklahoma, USA. Carl Barnes bequeathed it to Greg Shoen, who in 2010 entrusted it to the Seed Savers Network, Native Seeds. This variety has become a symbol of the passion and love of diversity that still drives many farmers around the world.
