This ancient variety, adapted to regions with rainy autumns, offers an abundance of small black beans to be eaten semi-dry or dry. Very popular in Latin America, they are perfect for making soup.

Sow directly in place, 2 to 3 cm deep, every 8 cm, in rows 40 cm apart, or in stacks of 3 to 5 seeds, 40 cm apart in all directions. Plant out 3 weeks after emergence. In mild-climate regions, sow as early as April.

To consume semi-dry beans, harvest the pods as they start to turn yellow. To consume dry beans, wait until they turn yellow and dry completely.

This ancient variety, originally from northern Latin America, was brought to the United States in 1832 by Grant M. Thorburn, one of the first U.S. seedsmen. This variety was subsequently bred into the "Midnight Black Turtle Soup" variety.
