It was introduced around 1845 by James Gregory of Marblehead, Massachusetts. It was named after Miss Elizabeth Hubbard, their washerwoman, who introduced it. According to the Gregory family, the variety was introduced from Boston to Marblehead around 1798. It is thought to have originated in the Caribbean or South America. There is a depiction of a warty green hubbard spotted with yellow in a still-life painting dating from 1820 in Philadelphia. The "Green Hubbard" is also known today as the "True Hubbard".
