Seeds found on an archaeological site in Peru correspond genetically with the "Banana Squash" currently grown. Banana Squash was introduced to the United States by R.H. Shumway in 1893. The traditional variety had a blue-gray skin with orange stripes, becoming creamy-pink at maturity. Around 1900, the Los Angeles seed company Aggeler et Musser developed three lines: a yellow-orange variety, a blue-gray variety and a pink variety.
