This old, compact French variety produces a beautiful apple 20 to 25 cm in diameter, with green leaves speckled with blood-red towards the heart. They have a tender texture and good flavor.

Sow in pots or slabs at a temperature of 10-18°C, one month before planting. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, press lightly and water. Once the plants have 4 leaves, prick out. You can also sow lightly, directly in the field, every 15 days for better staggered harvests, then thin out. This type of sowing produces hardier plants, less susceptible to bolting.

This ancient variety, originally from France, is described in Vilmorin-Andrieux's 1885 book "Les Plantes Potagères". It was introduced under this name in the United States in 1906 by C.C. Morse & Co. of San Francisco. It is also known as "Strawberry Cabbage Lettuce".
