The melon - Cucumis melo - is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family and the Melothrieae tribe. The genus Cucumis comprises some 38 known species. There are a number of different types of melon, and their classification varies from author to author. According to the book "La pharmacopée marocaine traditionnelle", "the seeds contain a globulin and a gluteinline, both rich in certain amino acids; platinum; a fatty oil (27%) containing glycerins, linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids. The pulp contains citric acid, carotene, protase and pyruvic carboxylase. An emetic substance, melonemetin, has been detected in the root.
