This variety was developed by Alan Kapuler of Peace Seeds, who considers it his best selection of red sweetcorn since he began working with anthocyanin corn over 15 years ago. The story behind the creation of this sweet corn is as follows: Alan Kapuler crossed a "Hopi" corn variety with "True Platinum" (which he de-hybridized from "Platinum Lady") to obtain "Martian Purple". He then crossed this line with "Ruby Queen" (an F1 hybrid) to obtain "Double Red". This line was then crossed with "Silver Choice" (an F1 hybrid) to give "Martian Jewels". The latter was then crossed with "Breeder's Bicolor" (an F1 hybrid). For more than thirty years, Alan Kapuler has been working on the de-hybridization of the best F1 corn hybrids, which were produced, let's not forget, from the best OP varieties, i.e. the best old open-pollinated corn varieties.
