Welcome Bocking 14 comfrey, a hybrid resulting from a natural cross, to your garden for its many uses in organic gardening or permaculture. This excellent green manure, the richest in potassium of the various comfrey varieties, produces a generous crop of large, dark-green, rough, hairy leaves, followed by small, melliferous purple or blue flowers. Less invasive than comfrey, this comfrey multiplies only by cuttings and not by seed.

How do I grow Bocking 14 comfrey?

Bocking 14 comfrey can be planted in the vegetable garden, or in a large container, in late summer or spring, from March to May.

Choose a semi-shaded position and favor deep, cool, moist soil. Add well-decomposed compost or potting soil to the planting holes, then prick out the plants 60 to 80 cm apart in all directions.

Cut back comfrey plants before flowering to encourage foliage development.

A deciduous perennial, comfrey's foliage disappears in winter and reappears in spring.

How to cut comfrey?

Comfrey is easily propagated by taking root cuttings. Take this cutting in autumn, in September or October, or in spring, in March or April:

  • use a spade to dig up a plant or a fragment around the perimeter of the existing plant;
  • cut small sections of root 5 to 7 cm long;
  • bury each small root cutting flat, 5-7 cm deep and 60 cm apart;
  • water, depending on the weather, until the first signs of new plant growth appear.

How to make comfrey purin?

You'll need 1 kg of fresh comfrey leaves (picked 3 hours beforehand) and 10 liters of spring or rain water.

  • Fill a can with 10 liters of rain or spring water.
  • Place the comfrey leaves in the can, edging them to prevent them rising to the surface.
  • Close the container with a lid, leaving as little air as possible inside.
  • If the can is transparent, cover it to keep it dark.
  • Stir the preparation daily.

When fermentation begins, make sure the outside temperature is 30°C.

Once the solution is ready, filter it and transfer it into cans, which should be stored away from light and heat.

If you add a preservative (5mg/l) such as rosemary essential oil or grapefruit extract, you can keep the preparation for 1 year.

Making Comfrey balm

Moisturizing and healing, Comfrey balm repairs and protects the skin. You can also make oil or macerate preparations, or simply use the fresh leaves.

  • Wash 4 to 5 fresh organic comfrey roots (harvested just before use).
  • Fry for a short time in 250 g vegetable oil.
  • Leave to stand overnight.
  • Reheat the next day, place in a cloth and squeeze out.
  • Place the balm in a container and store in the freezer.

You can add natural preservatives such as vitamin E, grape seed oil...and, depending on use (healing, astringent, moisturizing...), essential or vegetable oils to reinforce Comfrey's action.
