Peppers
Capsicumsp. is a member of the Solanaceae family and the Solaneae tribe. The Capsicum genus comprises some 27 known species. The word Capsicum comes from the Greek "kapto", meaning "to bite". There are five domesticated species: Capsicum annuum, Capsicum baccatum, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum frutescens and Capsicum pubescens. Today, pepper varieties are classified according to the Scoville scale. This lists their capsaicin content - the alkaloid that gives chillies their spicy flavour.
